Job Summary
The Hosting Services (Platform) division maintains Tessitura Network's mission critical hosting environments for 600+ organizations world-wide. Under the direction of the Director of Hosting Technology, the Senior Database Engineer manages database infrastructure and services that support our customer-facing applications, taking ownership of data integrity, security, and performance. The Senior Database Engineer will design, implement, and maintain highly available large-scale cloud-based production database infrastructure. They will lead the design and evolution of Tessitura database infrastructure and will work with the Senior Database Administrator to actively develop, monitor, and improve the performance and reliability of database systems. They will work closely with systems engineers, application developers and other technical staff to optimize existing database architecture.

The successful candidate will have 5+ years experience or equivalent combination designing and administering multiple Microsoft SQL Server databases in a 24x7 enterprise production environment to include installing, configuring, monitoring, upgrading, and maintaining complex database systems. They bring an automation-first mindset and are proactive in identifying, recommending, and implementing strategies and solutions.

Specific Responsibilities:
  • Lead the design, implementation, and maintenance of highly available large-scale cloud-based production database and infrastructure
  • Own the strategic direction of platform database infrastructure, working closely with Platform, Software Engineering, and Product teams to ensure cloud-first, scalable solutions
  • In collaboration with Platform team and Senior Database Administrator, define and implement observability (alerting, metrics, monitoring) of database infrastructure and schema
  • Identify technical opportunities, solutions, and best practices and make recommendations to leadership and peers
  • Automate common database tasks to reduce toil and increase database reliability
  • Lead the development and revision of standard processes relating to staff and customer access, data retention, and development
  • Provide operational support and incident management for database functions
  • Maintain and troubleshoot database systems (primarily Microsoft SQL Server) in production, staging, and sandbox environments
  • Own the backup and recovery process for all production databases
  • Create, update, and audit documentation as required
  • Monitor, manage, and resolve escalated issues
  • Follow defined processes for incident and change management
  • Participate in on-call schedule
  • Travel two to three times per year for meetups and conferences as needed
Required Skills and Experience:
  • 5+ years experience developing and maintaining highly available multi-tenant transactional Microsoft SQL Server databases in 24x7 enterprise environment, including server architecture, migration, performance tuning, backup, and recovery
  • Experience with Basic and Always On availability groups
  • Expertise in optimizing database performance at query, schema, and instance levels
  • Demonstrated experience in working with at least one scripting language such as PowerShell, Perl, Python, Ruby, etc. to automate manual tasks
  • Knowledge of database security and data privacy regulations
  • Understanding of underlying operating systems, storage and networking
  • Ability to lead cross-functional teams and communicate effectively with peers and upper management
  • Strong communication (written and verbal), organization, planning, leadership and management skills. Comfortable with presenting to all levels of management.
Preferred Skills:
  • Experience with multiple RDBMS (e.g. Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, etc.)
  • AWS Cloud database experience, sch as Amazon RDS, Redshift or DynamoDB
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code using CDK, CloudFormation, or Terraform
  • Experience converting single-tenant applications to multi-tenant
  • Experience mitigating from Microsoft SQL Server Standard to Microsoft SQL Server Enterprise
  • Knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server Licensing
  • Certifications in PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server, or AWS
